Collecting and keeping items such as juggle balls, yo-yo's, and paddle balls allows you to earn multipliers for each item you grab. This is useful for clearing levels such as 2-5. You can collect up to 6 juggle balls at once for an 8x multiplier on each item you collect while playing with them. Likewise for each yo-yo or paddle ball you will accumulate a 2x multiplier.
